How to replay English course audio on iPhone

Downloaded an English course but cannot find it on your iPhone, or unsure whether to unzip it first? Start by finding the files, then get the first track playing.

Where did the downloaded course go?

Open Browse in the iPhone Files app. Look in Downloads if you saved to iCloud Drive, or On My iPhone for local storage. If the publisher asked you to choose another folder, go there. Check the extension as well as the name, because files may have similar names. Apple's guide to downloaded files

Select an audio file such as MP3 when importing into Rehear. You do not need to unzip a ZIP course before adding it. Tap the ZIP in Files only if you want to inspect its contents first. Apple's ZIP instructions

Rehear supports m4a, mp3, wav, aac and caf. Files in iCloud Drive or similar storage may be unavailable until downloaded to iPhone. If import stops, first check whether Files can open the audio.

Choose according to the file type

One audio file
Select it through Local Files in Rehear. You can also send it from the Files share menu.
Several audio files
Select them together in Rehear's file picker. Check their contents on the confirmation screen before adding.
ZIP
Select it without unzipping, or send it from the Files share menu.
Folder
Select it through Local Files. The Files share menu cannot send a whole folder.
Music library
Tap +, open Music Library and choose tracks. Continue to review the selection, then add and open.

Music tracks are registered as references to the original library. They must be on the iPhone, unprotected and readable by Rehear. Cloud-only or protected tracks cannot be added. Downloading a track from an Apple Music subscription does not necessarily make it usable.

Check the tracks you add to Rehear

  1. Tap + in the library and choose Local Files.
  2. Choose audio, a ZIP or a folder from the location you found. You can select several audio files together.
  3. After reading finishes, check the course name and tracks on the confirmation screen. If the audio you want is there, add and open it.

Selecting files alone does not confirm the import. For a course with many tracks, check missing items and order here.

Find a passage to replay in the first track

Play the first track to check it is the right recording. If you miss a sentence, return by phrase first. When the section is too broad or phrase boundaries are unavailable, see setting an A-B section. You can practise the passage without restarting the track.

If adding does not work

Cannot find or open a file

Search for the course name in Files. If it is in cloud storage, stay connected and wait for the iPhone download to finish. If it still will not open, check whether the publisher's download completed.

Cannot read a ZIP

Rehear cannot directly import password-protected or damaged ZIPs. Download again if it may have stopped partway. For password-protected materials, check whether the publisher offers the audio files separately.

Some files are missing

PDFs and images inside ZIPs or folders are not imported. You cannot add an archive with no supported audio. Expand it in Files and look for m4a, mp3, wav, aac or caf recordings. Changing a filename's extension does not change the audio format.
