Rehear

Seven questions for choosing a language learning audio player

The controls you need depend on your practice. Skipping back a few seconds may be enough, or you may need the same sentence repeatedly. Choose with these seven questions about the problems you encounter, rather than counting features.

  1. Can you import your own materials?

If your course is in MP3 or ZIP files, check the import method first. Rehear can add supported audio files and ZIPs. If you only listen inside a streaming service's app, you may not need this.

  2. Is it easy to return to the sentence you need?

If skipping back ten seconds often takes you to a sentence you already know, try phrase navigation. Rehear can return to the previous phrase or repeat the same part when boundaries are available. For mostly uninterrupted listening, ordinary skip-back controls may suffice.

  3. Can you choose the section yourself?

A phrase boundary may cut through a word you cannot say. Then choosing points A and B can help. In Rehear, you can move each end independently. If phrases suffice, there is no need to use A-B repeat.

  4. Will you also practise with podcasts?

If you switch between courses and podcasts, check that replay works similarly for both. Rehear can add podcasts to the library. Skip this question if you do not use shows for practice.

  5. Can you spend time listening without text?

If you want to check the answer only after encountering a word you cannot write, see whether the transcript can stay closed. In Rehear, open it only when needed. If the course's own script is enough, you may not need automatic transcripts.

  6. Where are audio and text processed?

When importing your own audio, check where it is stored and transcribed. Rehear generates transcripts on-device in supported environments. See the privacy policy for availability and data handling.

  7. Which plan includes the controls you want?

Check both what you can try free and which plan includes the controls you want to keep using. Testing one familiar recording makes this easier to judge. Check current prices and terms in the App Store.

You do not need an app that scores perfectly on all seven. Compare two or three questions relevant to your difficulties. When unsure, import one familiar recording and see whether you can quickly return to a sentence. See opening course audio for iPhone import steps.
